One-week school on Fundamentals of Metamaterials Electromagnetics

Flyer download (in  .doc format)

Time: November 16-20, 2009
Place: Sokos Hotel Levi, Levi ski resort, Lapland, Finland

Lecturers: Professors Ari Sihvola, Sergei Tretyakov, Nader Engheta, Filiberto Bilotti

This short course is designed for post-graduate students and young researchers who are starting or already working in the field of complex artificial electromagnetic materials (metamaterials). This is an introductory course which will give fundamental knowledge about electromagnetic materials and their effective parameters. Students will learn, for instance, why arrays of wires can behave as free-electron plasma with negative effective permittivity, what determines the permeability of split-ring-resonator media, how negative refraction happens, and how the perfect lens operates. This course will also treat fundamental properties of plasmonic media and optical properties of metals and novel composites for plasmonic optical devices. The course combines lectures, problem-solving and self-study sessions, and short presentations by the students. The course will last five days.
The event is jointly organized and sponsored by the Virtual Institute for Artificial Electromagnetic Materials and Metamaterials (European Doctoral Programmes on Metamaterials), GETA Graduate School, and the Helsinki University of Technology.
